The Summer Suite
St. Charles Hall opens its doors this summer for an evening of chamber music. Come meet 20 young musicians from the Hochschule Luzern – Musik and enjoy a vibrant concert to celebrate the season.
“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”
Shakespeare once asked this question, only to answer: “Thou art more lovely and more temperate.” In Modern English: Could I compare you to a summer day? You are more beautiful, and your beauty outlasts the summer sun.
Summer Suite shares this idea: that love, like summer, is full of warmth, promise, and brilliance. The music in this program gives voice to these emotions—tenderness and fire, longing and joy, moments that blaze and then drift into memory.
Shostakovich’s youthful Piano Trio, written in the glow and ache of first love, anchors a concert that explores emotional depth across time and culture—from Gershwin’s sultry Summertime to Manuel de Falla’s Seven Spanish Popular Songs, steeped in folk tradition, pride, and poetic defiance. Even Liszt’s glittering Rigoletto Paraphrase becomes more than display—it becomes emotion in motion.
This concert is the closing chapter of NOW!’s first season. A celebration of musical honesty, daring youth, and the timeless search for love through sound.
